BYD Sealion 7

The arrival of the BYD Sealion 7 UK models marks an important expansion of the brand’s Ocean Series, which already includes the Dolphin, Seal, and Seal U. This fully electric mid-size SUV features a sleek coupe-style body and is designed to accommodate five passengers. The vehicle’s design and technological advancements are critical factors for drivers wondering if this model suits their lifestyle. With a focus on striking aesthetics, high-end cabin technology, and extensive safety equipment, the Sealion 7 aims to establish a strong presence in the electric SUV market.

Exterior Design

The design language of the vehicle was overseen by Wolfgang Egger, the Global Design Director for BYD. He describes the vehicle as “A fresh family SUV with a sporty, unique appearance.” The exterior styling integrates the familiar Ocean series face, highlighted by Dual-U “floating” LED headlights and an X-face configuration, where the daytime running light and turn signal are combined into one unit.

To improve aerodynamic efficiency, the front bumper incorporates an air channel. Towards the rear, the vehicle features a high diffuser and an upper spoiler designed so that air flows under it. The profile of the car is defined by flush door handles and a dual waistline, while the rear styling includes a ducktail spoiler, muscular rear haunches, water-drop tail lights, and a full-width tailgate light signature. The vehicle sits on 20-inch wheels on the Design AWD and Excellence AWD trims, while the Comfort RWD uses 19-inch wheels. In terms of exterior paint, Atlantis Grey is standard, while Space Black, Polar White, and Indigo Grey are available for an additional £1,100.

Interior Technology and Practicality

Inside the cabin, the layout revolves around a wide floating black panel complete with multi-colour ambient lighting. The standard technology equipment list is comprehensive. The centrepiece is a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen, supported by a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel for the driver. A 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system is standard across all trims, as is an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, 4G connectivity, and a 3-year trial for navigation.

For device charging and connectivity, there is a 50 W wireless charging pad located behind the crystal gear lever, along with front and rear USB ports (18 W Type-A and 60 W Type-C). The infotainment system features a 3D car rendering UI with dynamic wallpaper, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality that is more deeply integrated, and “Hi BYD” four-zone voice control.

The seating features integrated headrests, and according to Egger, the rear seats are adjustable fore and aft, providing “huge” rear legroom thanks to the vehicle’s new-energy architecture. The front seats are heated and ventilated, with the driver receiving an 8-way electric seat featuring memory and 4-way lumbar support, while the passenger gets a 6-way electric seat. Rear passengers also benefit from heated seats. The Comfort and Design AWD trims feature vegan leather upholstery, whereas the top-tier Excellence AWD upgrades to Nappa leather and adds a Head-Up Display (HUD). A Tahiti Blue interior colour option is exclusively available on the Excellence AWD trim.

A panoramic sunroof with an electric sunshade, a heated leather steering wheel, dual-zone climate control with air purification, double-layer laminated front glass, rear privacy glass, and an electric tailgate with kick-to-open functionality are all standard.
